Defending US Open champion Andy Murray beat Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin to set up a quarter-final against Stanislas Waw-rinka on Thursday.
The Briton was irritated by a number of bad line calls and struggled for consistency on a windy evening, but was not seriously threatened in a 6-7 6-1 6-4 6-4 win. Murray, 26, was given prime-time billing on and duly delivered the expected victory to reach his 17th Grand Slam quarter-final. He will next face ninth seed Wawrinka on Thursday after the Swiss upset fifth seed Tomas Berdych 3-6 6-1 7-6 6-2 on Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Afghanistan has entered to the semi finals in the ongoing 8th SAFF Championship 2013.
During the match held at Halchowk Ground in the capital today, Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka by 3-1 in their second match under Group ‘B’. Though Sri Lanka led the match through a goal from Mohamed Fazal in 36th minute of the first half, Afghanistan netted three goals in the second half to pull the odds on their side. This is Afghanistan’s second straight win in the regional championship. The team had first played against Bhutan, beating them with a score of 3-0.
Now, Afghanistan will play against Maldives on Friday. Similarly, In another match held this evening, Maldives defeated Bhutan by 8-2. For Maldives, Ali Asfaqu scored 4 goals, Ali Umar scored two and Mohammad Amyer and Ali Umar scored one goal each. For Bhutwan, Pasang and Chencho scored one goal each. Meanwhile, Nepal will play against 6th time SAFF Champion India tomorrow afternoon. The game will be held at 3.30 pm at Dasasarth Stadium. Similarly, Pakistan will face Bangladesh tomorrow.

Preparations for the 8th SAFF Football Championship set to commence in Kathmandu from Saturday have been complete. 
The All Nepal Football Association informed that all works at the Dashrath Stadium and the Halchowk grounds have been finalized. Ten games will be held at the Dasrath Stadium while 5 matches will be held at the Halchowk Ground.
The winning team will receive a cash prize of 50 thousand US dollars while the runner up will get 25 thousand US dollars. Similarly, teams reaching the semi-finals will receive 10 thousand US dollars each. ANFA President Ganesh Thapa informed that South Asian Football Association has provided 400 thousand US dollars while Nepal government has provided 60 lakh rupees to ANFA for the championship. Eight South Asian countries will participate in the tournament. In Group A, there are Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, while in Group B, there are Afghanistan, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.

India Under-23 has outfit lifted the ACC Emerging Teams Cup title. With a resounding nine-wicket win over Pakistan Under-23 in the final today in Singapore, India clinched the title.

The first national club swimming competition has started in Kathmandu today. On the first day of the game, Sirish Gurung of Nepal Police club grabbed 4 gold medals.
Gurung grabbed gold in each 100 and 400 meter free styles, 202 meter butterfly and 100 meter backstroke. He completed the target of 400 meter free style in 4 minutes 49.5 seconds. Sirish had defeated Dilip Thapa and kabindra Thapa Magar of Tribhuwan Army Club in 100 meter backstroke and 200 meter butterfly respectively.
Likewise, Dinesh Manandhar of Rotary club grabbed gold and Jayanta Prakash Gurung of Marigold club grabbed silver medal. Nepal's A Division club Manang Marsyangdi has grabbed the title of Kings Cup Football. During the finals held in Chamli-Minthang stadium of Bhutan today, Manang MArsyangdi club defeated Yadnese football club by 4-2.
For the winning team, Bishal Rai scored the first goal in 33rd minute of the match. For Bhutanese team, Chencho scored two goals. Earlier, Manang Marsyangdi had defeated United Sikkim to advance to the final of the tournament.

The National Sports Council has initiated scientific training system to the national players vying for international medals. The council also has issued a directive for the capacity building, leadership and personality development of the players, health test among others.
The NSC has allocated the budget of 2 crore 25 lakh for the same. Addressing a program in Kathmandu today, NSC member secretary Yubraj Lama informed that various decisions have been made for the players and instructors to be implemented within 6 months. He added that the foreign instructors will provide necessary trainings to the national players of Athletics, Ushu, Takewando, Badminton, Cricket among 10 other games.
The national football team has left to Bahrain for practice matches as part of preparation for the SAFF Championship.
All Nepal Football Association bided farewell to the squad for the friendly matches against Bahrain and Kuwait. The team will hold practice for 2 weeks. A team comprising 30 players was busy in internal practice since last 2 months.
Earlier on Saturday, ANFA had announced the 25 member squad for the game. The team is selected by coach Jack Stefan-owski and his assistant Richard Orlowski. The SAFF Championship is scheduled to kick off in Kathmandu from September 1st, 2013. Nepal is under Group A along with India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Similarly, Group B comprises Afghanistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. Nepal will play its first match on September 1st evening against Bangladesh.
National Kickboxing Association is organizing kickboxing competition in Kathmandu from August 7. Altogether 120 players from five development regions will take part in the competition.
The competitors will compete in light contact, semi contact, and full contact to be organized at the semi-covered hall of the National Sports Council. The competition will run for three days.
Nepal Police Club clinched the title of the 1st Army Chief Cup defeating Nepal Army 1-0 goal.
Ishwori Magar of Nepal Army made a suicide goal at the 52nd minute of the match played at the Nepal Army Headquarter Ground in the capital. Winner Nepal Police Club received a cash prize of Rs three lakhs while the runner-ups received Rs 1 lakh 50 thousand. Third place Armed Police Force received Rs 75 thousand. Likewise, Namita Dali of Nepal Police Club has been adjudged as the best goalkeeper. Similarly, Ghim Kumari Gurung of Nepal Police was declared as the best defender.
Nepal Army's Dipa Adhikari was declared as the best mid-fielder, Nepal Army's Krishnaa Khatri as the best forward. Nepal Army Chief Gaurav Shumsher Rana, National Sports Council Member Secretary Yuvraj Lama, ANFA President Ganesh Lama gave away the prizes to the teams. The championship was organized by Nepal Army, which was participated by five regional teams and three departmental teams.
The Nepali National Cricket Team left for Sri Lanka to play some practice matches in preparation for the ACC Emerging Teams Cup Cricket Tournament to be held in Singapore from coming August 17 to 25.
The team led by captain Paras Khadka will be in Sri Lanka until August 16 before flying to Singapore. Other members of the team are Gyanendra Malla (vice capt.), Sharad Bheswakar, Abinash Karna, Prithu Banskota, Shakti Gauchan, Rahul Biswakarma, Basant Regmi, Ramnaresh Giri, Pradip Giri, Sagar Pun, Binod Bhandari, Chandra Saud and Anil Mandal. Likewise, the reserves comprise Amrit Bhattarai, Sanjam Regmi, Naresh Budhayera and Mahesh Chettri. Nepal´s Sri Lankan coach Pubudu Dasanayake is accompanying the team along with members of the team management. In the tournament to be held in Singapore, Nepal has been grouped with India, Pakistan and Afghanistan in Group A. Group B comprises Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the UAE and host Singapore.
Nepal Army and Nepal Police Club have advanced to the final of the First Chief of Army staff National Women Football Championship 2013.
During the semi final match held at Nepal Army ground in Bhadrakali today, the Army defeated Far Western Region by 5-1 to advance to the final. Krishna Khatri scored two goals while Dipa Adhikari, Kabita Dhimal and Bhujunga scored one goal each for Army. Similarly, in another match, Nepal Police beat Armed Police W3omen’s Team by -1 to enter into finals.
Niru Thapa scored two goals and Rupa added one for the winning team while Anu Lama scored a consolation goal for APF. The final game will be held on Friday.
