Nag Panchami, celebrated across the country

Nag Panchami, the festival dedicated to serpent god, was observed across the country. The festival is observed on the fifth day of the bright half of the Nepali month of Shrawan as per the lunar calendar. It is celebrated by worshipping images or live Nags. People make offerings of the dubo grass, milk and the paste of rice grains, red vermillion powder and yoghurt to the Naag. They also paste the posters of nags at their homes in the belief that doing so would save ward off natural calamities. There is a religious belief that pasting the picture of the serpent god above the main door of houses and offering worship to the deity on this day protects the house from lightning and fire and the family from snakes and scorpions. Devotees thronged temples of Nags since early morning. Nag Pokhari, Taudaha of Kathmandu, Nagdaha of Lalitpur and Siddhapokhari of Bhaktapur are some of the famous shrines for the devotees in the Kathmandu Valley. According to Hindu scriptures, the serpent-gods are protector of earth and associated to rain. People believe that worship of Naags insures that there will be no drought.
