India stresses on timely CA elections

Nepali Congress president Sushil Koirala met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today. The duo met at the latter's residence at 7 Race Course Road, New Delhi this evening. During the meeting, the Indian Prime Minister said Nepal should be able to hold the Constituent Assembly elections in November. He also added that India was ready to provide necessary support for the CA elections. The Indian prime minister urged the NC president to bring all the political forces onboard the election process. In response, Koirala said that the major political parties and the government were committed to November 19 polls and that efforts to bring the dissident parties were underway. NC general secretary-duo Krishna Situala and Prakash Man Singh were also present during the meeting. Earlier today, Koirala met Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh. During her meeting with Koirala, Singh said that India was quite confident that the CA polls in Nepal would be held on the stipulated date of November 19. Earlier today, Koirala offered floral tribute at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial in Rajghat, New Delhi. Koirala is also scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid before a meeting with UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. He is also scheduled to meet Bharatiya Janata Party’s Sushma Swaraj. Koirala is on a six-day official visit to the southern neighbor India. The judicary has not been independent and corruption-free. Nepali Congress senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that the judicary has not been independent and corruption-free. Speaking at a program in Banepa, Deuba said only an independent judiciary can protect democracy. He added that democracy cannot be institutionalized in the presence of a corrupt judiciary. Deuba maintained that judiciary should not be influenced in any pretext. On the occasion, he expressed the hope that all poll-opposing parties will participate in the elections.
